You ever set the hook on what you know is a rock…

…and then the rock starts moving?

Yeah. That was pretty much how this day went.

It Started Exactly How You’d Expect

We kicked things off on the Provo River just outside of Park City, and right away I’m handing out flies that look like they shouldn’t even exist.

Size 24 thread midges.

You already know the reaction:
“Dude… there’s no way.”

There’s always a moment where someone thinks I’m messing with them.

I’m not.

The Struggle Is Part of It

First hour?

Not pretty.

  • Missed eats
  • Late hook sets
  • A couple “was that a fish?” moments

And at least one guy convinced he had it figured out… right up until he didn’t.

But that’s how this time of year goes.

You’re not just fishing—you’re learning how to fish better whether you want to or not.

Then Something Flips

It’s always subtle.

One clean drift.
One eat.
One fish.

And then it snowballs.

All of a sudden:

  • Drifts tighten up
  • People stop talking mid-cast
  • Everyone starts watching their indicator like it owes them money

And yeah… fish start coming to the net.

“That Was 100% a Rock”

At one point I hear:
“Hang on—I’m stuck.”

Cool. Normal.

Then the “snag” starts shaking its head.

Now we’ve got a situation.

Fish comes up… solid one.

And just like that, the confidence level goes through the roof.

Quick Weber Check

Later we bounced over to the Weber River.

I’ll be straight with you—it’s still a little low in spots. But with flows coming up, we were finally able to fish water above the Lost Creek confluence again, which is a big deal.

More water = more options.

We stuck with the same program:

  • Small midges
  • Sow bugs
  • Nothing fancy

And it worked.

Not lights out, but enough action to keep things interesting—and honestly, that’s a win on the Weber right now.

Why These Are the Days That Stick

It wasn’t easy.

It wasn’t fast.

But it was one of those days where you could literally see the progression:

Confused → Frustrated → Focused → Fired up

That’s the good stuff.

That’s what people remember when they go home.

Spring Fishing Isn’t Supposed to Be Easy

Fishing around Park City and Heber City this time of year will make you earn it a little.

But that’s also why it’s so fun.

You’re not just out there casting…

You’re figuring it out.

If You’re Thinking About It… Do It

If you’re coming out to Park City and wondering if fly fishing is worth trying right now—

It is.

Just be ready to:

  • Fish small
  • Miss a few
  • Laugh about it
  • And then randomly stick a really good fish
