I’ll be honest—this time of year doesn’t look that sexy from the outside.

You’re not seeing giant bugs.
You’re not throwing huge dry flies.
And half the flies we’re using look like… nothing.

And yet—this is some of the best fly fishing we get all year around Park City.

The Tiny Fly Reality

If you’ve fished with me this time of year, you’ve heard it:

“Yeah… go smaller.”

Then smaller again.

Then I hand you something in a size 24 and you look at me like I just made a mistake.

That’s the game right now on the Provo River.

We’re fishing:

  • Thread midges
  • Tiny mayflies
  • Little sow bugs

Stuff that barely looks fishable… until it is.

When It Clicks

There’s always a moment.

Usually starts with:
“I don’t think they can even see this…”

Then the indicator twitches.

Then chaos.

And all of a sudden you’re in it—actually understanding what a good drift feels like, seeing where fish sit, figuring out how everything connects.

That’s why people get hooked on this.

Not just catching fish… but figuring it out.

The Weber (Let’s Just Be Real)

Now over on the Weber River

Yeah—it’s low.

Like… “maybe let’s go fish the Provo instead” low.

But if you know where to look—deeper runs, a little faster water—you can still make it happen. And every now and then you’ll bump into a fish that makes it totally worth it.

Plus, when those afternoon BWO hatches show up?
Things can get interesting quick.

Why This Time of Year Is So Good

Here’s the deal:

  • Fish are active
  • They’re feeding consistently
  • And they haven’t been pounded all summer yet

You’re not fighting crowds.
You’re not guessing.

You’re just out there fishing… and it works.

It’s Not About Being Good

This is the part I wish more people understood.

You don’t need to be a “fly fisherman” to enjoy this.

You just need to be willing to:

  • Try something new
  • Laugh at yourself a little
  • And pay attention

That’s it.

The rest comes quick.

If You’re Thinking About It…

If you’re going to be around Park City or Heber City, this is your sign.

Skip a half day of whatever else you had planned and go fishing.

Worst case?
You stand in a river for a few hours and reset your brain.

Best case?
You’re already planning your next trip before the day’s over.

Let’s Go Fishing

If you want to actually dial it in instead of guessing, come fish with Wild Utah Fly Fishing.

We’ll keep it simple, keep it fun, and yeah… we’ll probably hand you a fly that looks way too small.

Trust me on that part. 🎣
